Both were drawn in the 1930s to suit the new semis and estates going up across the country. Both are made the traditional way: utile hardwood, mortice and tenon joints, flat panels to stay stable, made bespoke to your exact sizes. I’ve fitted plenty of each across the North West.

A thirties semi knows when the door is wrong.
White plastic where there should be timber. Plain glass, a modern off-the-shelf door, a letterplate sitting in the wrong spot. On a 1930s front it all shows, and the house starts to look patched rather than looked after.
Put the right door back on and the bay, the brickwork and the porch line up again. The whole front reads the way the builder meant it to.
Made the way thirties doors were made.
Utile is a dense sipo mahogany that stays put and shrugs off the weather. Mortice and tenon joints. Flat plywood panels that resist movement, 44mm thick, made to your exact sizes.
It arrives unpainted and unfitted, on purpose. Your joiner hangs it, your painter finishes it, and the top light is left open for leaded or stained glass designed for your home.

I’ve worked with period front doors for thirty years and fitted the Estate and the Edinburgh across the North West — Bramhall, Sale, Manchester and plenty in between. Both are drawn from surviving originals, not a catalogue, so the proportions sit right on a real thirties house.

1930s front door with leaded glass
I had got to the stage where the front door needed to be replaced and I spent hour looking at doors (it was staring to become an obsession) but could find nothing I liked as much as the original 1930's door that I had.
I how have a beautiful front door with all the fittings , Chris even put up a new curtain rail for me, It was great to find someone passionate about what they do, I have no hesitation in recommending Chris to anyone who needs a new door.
