Rosie’s Victorian front door in Glossop
Rosie’s stone terraced house in Glossop had a upvc door when I first visited, and it was painted black!
Replacing a upvc door, we have to replace the frame as well. This is a good opportunity to change the frame design a bit so I raised the transome (the horizontal piece of wood over the door) to the same level as the chamfer on the stonework surrounding it.
I also put a chamfer on the edge of the frame to match the stone, rather than the traditional ovolo.
Only a small door, I needed to be sure that the frame was a big as it could be without disappearing behind the stone when fitted.
So, Rosie wanted a Victorian style door to suit the house but opted for a cricket bat panel in the bottom. This looks quite smart and also sets it aside from composite doors that try to look like genuine wooden doors.
Sunflower Leaded Glass

Rosie said she would like a natural style with sunflowers and a number above the door in the fanlight.
When the door was made, and I had true dimensions of the glass, I started designing something around her specification. I do my drawings now in Photoshop so I can easily move elements around or completely change them. I originally sent Rosie a picture with one sunflower in each door panel. Rosie asked if I could put two sunflowers in each panel and half an hour later I sent her what would be the final design.
The yellow border ties in with the sunflower petals as well as the brass door furniture.
Brass Door Furniture
Rosie was quite specific that she wanted all of the furniture to match, that is, made from the same grade of brass.
Brass is an allow of copper and zinc. A blend with more copper in it gives it a more red appearance. When door furniture comes from different suppliers you might appreciate the pieces are made from different blends.
I sent Rosie a link to what is available from Heritage Brass by Marcus and she chose pieces from only that range. They match very well.
Tom and I spent a long day in Glossop fitting the front door, frame and fanlight. It all needs to be secure before we leave, thankfully the rain didn’t start until we were getting in the van!
Next day I went on my own to fit the architrave inside which matched the internal door frames, and I offered to paint the stone surround and step (Rosie had the paint, intending to do it at the weekend). It was in awful condition so it made the final photo just a little nicer.
Best door on the street, as always.
